PROGRAM DETAILS
“This is peaceful, this is excellent, namely the stilling of all formations, the relinquishing of all attachments, the destruction of craving, dispassion, cessation, Nibbāna.” (MN 64.9)
LEAP is intended for experienced students of the Dhamma who want to explore the liberation teachings of the Buddha through practice, study, inquiry, and interactive exercises. It is a year-long program consisting of three retreats and is intended for those who have completed programs like Spirit Rock’s Dedicated Practitioners Program (DPP), Community Dharma Leader Program (CDL), Heavenly Messengers (HM), or an equivalent. Alternatively, long time practitioners or people who have participated in an equivalent program offered by another Vipassana teacher or organization are also eligible to apply.
The purpose of this program is to bring to life the liberating teachings of the Buddha both on retreat and in our daily practice. The three LEAP retreats will focus more on silent, intensive practice than DPP or CDL, but each retreat will include regular interactive and study sessions.
Spirit Rock is excited to offer this program again. Our previous iterations found it to be a great support to the experienced students in our community. We hope that those of you who have done DPP or CDL or have other significant study and practice experience will join us!

- Attendance at monthly small regional group meetings (in-person and Zoom options)
- Ongoing meetings with study/practice partners

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Open to: Everyone
Description:
All the time before you were born plus all the time after you die is almost exactly all the time there is. Yet we find ourselves here, alive, in time, with a question: how should I live?
We begin by listening deeply. The Buddha suggested we consistently underestimate the capacity of our heart. Retreat helps us to remember. Together, we’ll sit in the refuge provided by a 2,600-year legacy of wisdom and kindness. In the silence, we come to know the preciousness of life and the poignancy of the human condition. We discover a way of opening to the intensity of the human condition such that our heart is softened rather than hardened. We will offer systematic instructions in mindfulness meditation, as well as in loving-kindness practice.
Throughout the retreat, there are dharma talks and meetings with teachers to support you in your practice. All are welcome.
IMPORTANT – Details on our current COVID Safety Protocols for In-person Retreats. Subject to change.
Financial Information:
Sliding Scale: $350-$3360; 7 nights including food and lodging.
Please consider paying at the highest rate that you can afford: your generosity supports Spirit Rock, staff, and your fellow practitioners. Any amount offered above the Base rate is a tax deductible donation to Spirit Rock, and your generosity will enable and support the participation of others. These fees do not include dana for the teachers.
Supporter (guaranteed single room) – $3360
Benefactor – $2660
Sustainer – $2030
Base – $1330
Reduced – $840
Mudita/Karuna Scholarship (for anyone who needs financial assistance, including fixed income folks) – $350*
BIPOC Scholarship (for Black, Indigenous, and/or Persons of color) – $350*
Young Adult Scholarship (for young adults age 18-26 years) – $350*
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Scholarship offerings: In returning to the land, we will also be returning to our pre-pandemic scholarship options and policies. All scholarship rates require a minimum fee ($50/night). Scholarships are limited to TWO per calendar year for on-land retreats. And, while we are not able to offer “no one turned away”-type of scholarships for in-person retreats, they are still available for online offerings.
Room Occupancy Update*: Starting with our “Living with Awareness” retreat on March 27, 2022, we will return to double occupancy rooms. Most of our rooms are single occupancy (only 16 of 80 rooms are double occupancy). We will also return to offering a “guaranteed single room” rate and these will be limited (16). This rate guarantees a single room while helping to support scholarships and all we do here at Spirit Rock. Single rooms are not exclusive to the top end of the sliding scale; everyone has a chance of being assigned a single room.
*Subject to change depending upon COVID-19 situation.
Lottery Details:
Lottery applications are accepted between January 4, 2022 and January 25, 2022. Applications received after this date are automatically placed on the wait list (they will not be included in the first round of selections).
You will be notified about the lottery results within two weeks of the lottery close date. If you are notified that you have been granted a space, you will have 24 hours to pay a deposit to accept/hold the space. If you don’t accept the space within this deadline, we will offer it to the next person in line.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
In the storms of our lives, we need refuge – nourishment and support – a place to replenish our tired bodies and troubled hearts. When the Buddha taught meditation, his first instruction was to go sit under a tree. We will practice together in the age-old tradition of being outside in the company of the natural world. We will explore tapping into the natural stillness and dynamism that surrounds us outdoors and can teach us balance. As we integrate the stillness and movement, we will move toward being active participants in the world, while maintaining balance and ease in our hearts and minds.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
The Buddha was known as “The Happy One.” However, the teachings often seem to emphasize working with suffering. Joy and happiness can seem frivolous even though joy is one of the Seven Factors of Awakening. In this retreat we will practice with an emphasis
on cultivating wholesome states to develop our natural capacity for well-being and happiness. Our own development of well-being and joy then becomes our gift to a troubled world.
The retreat includes silent sitting and walking periods with instructions in Mindfulness meditation, practice meetings with teachers, and some experiential exercises. This retreat is appropriate for both experienced and new students.
Practices will include:
Inclining the mind toward wholesome states;
The power of intention;
Mindfulness as appreciation practice (wonder and gratitude);
Transforming suffering through Compassion;
How letting go leads to true freedom;
Loving-kindness for self and others;
Mudita (sympathetic joy);
and
The joy of simply being.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
In this retreat, we will study and embody one of the seven Factors of Awakening: Investigation. We will explore Investigation experientially and interactively. As sangha (community) we will learn how to investigate our phenomenological experience in sitting and walking meditation, discovering the inherent intelligence of being present.
We will also spent one period a day engaging in interactive inquiry practice, investigating and understanding our experience of the Dharma in dialogue with others. Join us for the adventure of Awakening.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Prerequisite: Completion of one (or more) 7-day/6-night (or longer) silent, residential or online Insight meditation retreat. If you are new to Nine Bodies, you are also encouraged (but not required) to complete a Nine Bodies Intro series before coming on the retreat.
Description:
The Nine Bodies teaching presents a unified map of the various capacities of consciousness, which are often only partially recognized (or completely unrecognized) even among long-term practitioners. This retreat offers a method for practicing Insight meditation in which consciousness itself becomes the object of meditation.
We will start with establishing mindfulness through the practice of arriving, and then turn toward ever more subtle levels of consciousness. The practice utilizes the felt sense as a means for freeing the mind of over-conceptualization and supporting the arising of liberating insights.
We respectfully acknowledge that this method is an integration of the Nine Bodies teachings from Himalayan yoga master Premvarni Balyogi and Thai Forest Insight teachings.
The retreat will include detailed guided meditations, teaching sessions, and cohort (small group) practice meetings. It is not recommended for practitioners experiencing acute grief or other strong mental challenges.
Many of our rooms are single occupancy (only 16 of 80 rooms are double occupancy). We will also return to offering a “guaranteed single room” rate and these will be limited (16). This rate guarantees a single room while helping to support scholarships and all we do here at Spirit Rock. The remaining single rooms are not exclusive to the top end of the sliding scale; however, they are initially prioritized for those with serious medical needs.
*Subject to change depending upon COVID-19 situation.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
During this week-long retreat, we will explore the Buddha’s teaching on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, with an emphasis on the awareness of the qualities of the mind. The practice will encourage relaxation of body and mind, while paying close attention to present moment experience and the relationship of the mind to our experience. The practice will unfold through the continuity of awareness in all activities during the retreat.
The teachings are influenced by the teacher’s practice with Theravādin Buddhist monk and author Sayadaw U Tejaniya. We request that you agree to work with the instructions that are offered during the retreat. Practice discussion meetings will be held in small groups every other day.

OPEN TO ALL SELF-IDENTIFIED BLACK, INDIGENOUS, AND PEOPLE OF COLOR
Description:
The waves of life are strong and unpredictable. Developing the capacity to stay the course, to be fluid in uncharted territory, and to brave discomfort and uncertainty allows us to mine the treasures that reside in the domain of unknowing and mystery. The medicine of Dharma holds us steady, trains us to lead with the heart, and teaches us to trust our capacity to return home to wholeness as we navigate an uncertain world.
Through silence and guided meditation, mindful movement and contemplative practices in nature, we will engage in opening our hearts to renewed possibilities of spaciousness, wonder, creativity, and liberation.

PROGRAM PREREQUISITES
A minimum of 50 nights of silent vipassanā, and/or mettā residential retreats. (Daylongs or non-residential retreats do not count towards the prerequisites.)
PROGRAM COMPONENTS and REQUIREMENTS
- Attendance at all three 8-night retreats
- Attendance at monthly small regional group meetings (in-person and Zoom options)
- Ongoing meetings with study/practice partners
- Regular Zoom meetings with LEAP teachers
- Completion of monthly homework including readings, reflections, and meditation instructions
- Commit to maintaining both meditative and daily life practice
- The practice of dana (generosity) to support program teachers, group leaders and mentoring teachers
- Meeting all financial obligations outlined in this application relating to program fees

*If you join the program after Jan. 1, 2023 you may be required to pay in fewer monthly installments.
Please consider the amount you would be able to afford in order to participate in LEAP. We ask you to select the highest possible level of program fees that meet your needs, as your generosity allows for those with lesser means to attend.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
Our Buddhist path develops the purest forms of love known to the human heart. The summer lovingkindness retreat teaches several kinds of meditation for liberating wisdom, concentration, healing, and purification. These deep forms of love emerge within the same heart that knows impermanence and non-self. The profound insight into universal emptiness only matures with pure love, through which it is brought into every aspect of our lives.
Unique Opportunity for a 19-night Retreat
Prerequisite for 19-night Retreat: Completion of one (or more) 9-night (or longer) silent, residential (in-person), insight meditation retreat(s). You will be required to list retreat experience during the registration process: teachers’ names, dates, location/center, length (# of retreat nights), and style of the retreat(s). Online retreats do not meet this prerequisite.
If you would like a longer retreat period (19 nights), you could attend BOTH the July Lovingkindness Retreat (July 5-15) and the July Insight (July 15-24) retreats back-to-back. We will reserve 30 spaces for this extended retreat opportunity. If you are offered one of these spaces, you will be able to bypass the lottery for the July Insight retreat.
HOW TO APPLY: Spaces are limited for these “bypass spots” so we strongly suggest you register for the July Lovingkindness (Metta) retreat as early as possible on opening day. These spots are first come, first serve. Registration will open at 9:00am PT. During the registration process for the July Lovingkindness retreat, you should select the “19-Night Retreat Option” and be prepared to list how you meet the prerequisite; this needs to include the teachers’ names, dates, location/center, length (# of nights), and style of the retreat(s).
We will let you know of your status within the following 72 hours of registering for the Lovingkindness Retreat. We will create a waitlist of folks who do not get in. Please do not call us prior to that time as we are busily processing registrations. If you are offered a “bypass spot”, you will be required to pay a minimum deposit for the July Insight retreat within 48 hours of receiving the notification of acceptance. If you need scholarship funding to attend the July Insight retreat, please indicate that when you register for the July Insight lottery. Please know that scholarship funding is limited for these bypass spots and is not guaranteed.
If you do not receive a bypass spot, then we suggest that you still register in the July Insight lottery, you may still have a second chance for the 19-night option if you are selected. See lottery details below.
Lottery Details for the July Insight Retreat:
This retreat is lottery-style in order to ensure that spaces are available for a diverse student body. Registering for a lottery does not ensure a space in the program. RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Open to: Families with children ages 7-15 years old
Description:
Find joy in a retreat for the whole family! After such a challenging couple of years, we’re excited to return The Family Retreat to the beautiful land at Spirit Rock. This will be a time for you and your family to rest, re-connect, play, and enjoy. This is a four-night residential retreat for adults and their children (ages 7-15 years old).
The days will combine age-appropriate meditation and Dharma teachings, games, arts and crafts, nature time, and more. Kids and teens will have organized time each day to be with same-aged peers, fully supervised by our outstanding mindful leaders. Adults will also have their own time to practice, relax, and receive Dharma from the teachers.
We create a safe and nurturing environment where all family constellations, races, gender identities, and bodies are welcome and belong. Children and adults from fellow families often forge lifelong friendships on this retreat.
Lottery Details:
Lottery applications are accepted between March 8, 2022 – March 29, 2022. Applications received after this date are automatically placed on the wait list (they will not be included in the first round of selections).

PROGRAM PREREQUISITES
A minimum of 50 nights of silent vipassanā, and/or mettā residential retreats. (Daylongs or non-residential retreats do not count towards the prerequisites.)

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Open to: Young adults ages 18-32 years
Description:
Come practice silent mindfulness and insight meditation for a week within a group of your peers. Give yourself a break from constant overstimulation and external demands as we create a supportive space for cultivating greater inner calm, spaciousness, and presence.
We will honor each person’s experience through radical self-awareness and deeper embodiment, exploring the ancient practices of guided and silent sitting, walking, heart meditations, movement, practice meetings with teachers, and Dharma talks. Over the course of the week, we will extend these practices until the entire day is one of steady, continuous awareness.
On the last day of the retreat we practice coming in and out of silence to learn conscious connection with the community around us. This is a fully silent retreat, and you will be asked to turn off and put away all electronic devices.

A fundamental aspect of establishing embodied mindfulness centers around contemplations of the elements. In the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta, the four elements of earth, water, fire, and air represent the four basic qualities of matter – solidity, liquidity, temperature, and motion. The Buddha also gave instruction for knowing space as a fifth element. These five elements are universal and when we contemplate them in relation to the body, they may bring a cooling of the grasping mind and a profound realization of emptiness and fullness.
During this retreat, we will practice with the descriptive nature of each of the elements, which can be known through the felt-sense, energetic-sense, and intuitive-knowing. We will contemplate the relationship they have with each other, their importance to establishing mindfulness and concentration, and allow them to support non-conceptual knowing from which insights naturally arise. This retreat includes guided and silent meditations, mindful movement, and practice meetings with teachers.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Prerequisite: Completion of at least two 7-night silent residential insight meditation retreats (in-person retreat experience; online retreats are not eligible).
Description:
Concentration, (samādhi), the collection and unification of the mind, was emphasized by the Buddha as one of the aspects of the Eightfold Path. It can bring joy to your practice and lead to the skillful use of pleasure in the meditative process. Whatever your level of practice, you can improve your Insight Meditation (vipassanā) by strengthening your concentration skills. Your ability to concentrate will develop in response to the attention you give it.
This retreat will offer a series of techniques for staying on the meditation object for extended periods of time. We will explore the factors of concentration that lead to the deep absorption states known as jhanas. Teachers will also give instruction for utilizing concentration during Insight practice.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Open to: Everyone
Description:
Awareness is the foundation of kindness—kindness is the expression of awareness.
Awareness and kindness are essential and beautiful qualities of an awakened life. Mindful awareness leads to clarity, understanding, and insight. Love allows us to meet life’s challenges with compassionate care. Together, they support a kind and wise embrace of ourselves, each other, and life.
In this retreat, we will discover how these qualities are intimately related and mutually supportive. We will explore how they are necessary in any journey of awakening, and in learning to live wisely and kindly.
We will cultivate awareness through mindfulness meditations and develop a compassionate orientation through heart-opening practices and attitudes. We will inquire into what obstructs the heart, and what hinders us from being fully present and awake in the moment. Teachings will focus on the integration of love and awareness, cultivating a mindfulness practice that is infused with a kind, receptive presence.

PROGRAM COMPONENTS and REQUIREMENTS

- Attendance at monthly small regional group meetings (in-person and Zoom options)

Open to: Everyone
Description:
Mindfulness offers us tools to develop our capacity to pay attention, to regulate emotions, and to cultivate states of lovingkindness, compassion, and even-mindedness. Mindfulness can be practiced from focused attention to breath to wide open, spacious, natural awareness. Over time one can access states of profound well-being.
In this retreat we will practice mindfulness through sitting and walking meditation, as well as in lectures and the opportunity to meet with teachers who will guide our practice. While rooted in the Buddhist practice of mindfulness, this retreat will focus on the practical applications of mindfulness and the range of ways to practice it. It is open to people of all backgrounds and experience, especially those interested in secular mindfulness.

Make the dark night shine
—Weingast, First Free Women
Open to: Self-identified women
Description:
We are in a time of increasing pressure, individually and collectively. The four noble truths, foundational Buddhist Teachings, point to pressure as a part of life, and our relationship to that pressure the choice point where our freedom lies. This retreat is designed to give you direct experience of freedom in context of deep rest and liberating teachings.
Our shared practices will include sitting meditation, contemplative embodied movement, outdoor practice, lovingkindness, storytelling, mandala drawing and Dharma talks.
Whatever your age, ethnicity, race, body type, or sexual orientation we invite you to join this diverse circle of women to co-create a journey of deep rest, renewal and liberating wisdom. We welcome trans and non-conforming women.
Our aspiration as teachers is that each woman will experience the next critical insight on her path. To support the integration of this retreat we will offer the opportunity to create self-organized circles of practice following the retreat.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Open to: Self-identified LGBTQIA2S+
Description:
Taking refuge in our capacity to love unconditionally asks us to take a leap into faith and radical imagination, freed from habitual cultural conditions of judgment, shaming, and blaming. We are called, moment after moment, to stand close to ourselves with awareness, discerning where our path of freedom lies for ourselves, for each other, and communities everywhere. This retreat supports each of us to be comfortable practicing lying down, standing, reclining, and sitting. There will be affinity groups for trans, elder, BIPOC, disabled, and neurodivergent communities.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Open to: Everyone
Description:
The Buddha’s teaching originated in South Asia over 2,500 years ago, but is still relevant for us today. Join us to explore Buddhist practices, stories, and teachings. This retreat will be oriented around silent practice as in a meditation monastery, with guided meditations, Dharma talks, and time for questions. We will practice mindfulness in sitting, walking, eating, and basic daily activities. The renunciation of technology, books, entertainment, and other aspects of regular life will facilitate the development of insight that will benefit us when we return to our modern lives. Open to all levels of experience.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
