Description:
Although it is a foundational Buddhist teaching, joy can seem frivolous or unspiritual, especially in these challenging times when it’s easy to get overwhelmed or outraged. We need skills to help us open to suffering, while not missing all the blessings. In this day retreat, we’ll discover ways to cultivate wholesome states to develop our natural capacity for well-being and joy, which then becomes our gift to a troubled world. We’ll explore how to open to the whole package of life with joy for our blessings, compassion for suffering, and holding it all with balance and equanimity that allows us to act with wisdom.
Our time together will include periods of guided and walking meditation, discussion, connection in community, written reflection, and Q&A.
General Information
Online registration for our programs is available until 12 noon of the last business day prior to the day of the event (e.g. online registration for a Monday program ends at 12 noon on the prior Friday). This retreat emphasizes quieting the mind, opening the heart, and developing profound clarity and depth of insight practice. Instruction will follow the traditional four foundations of mindfulness, combined with training in loving-kindness and compassion, through a daily schedule of silent sitting, walking, dharma talks and practice meetings with teachers.
These extended retreats (and all retreats at Spirit Rock) are not open for “self-retreats”.

Additional scholarship funding has been offered once again to support practitioners who self-identify as people of color. Scholarship rates are $40 per night.
Lottery/Application Information:
Our one-month and two-month retreats are extremely popular and in order to create more ease and fairness, we use a lottery process. The lottery is now closed (midnight Saturday, August 31, 2019). We will continue to accept applications on a rolling basis; however, you will be put on a waiting list. If you need scholarship funds to attend, please fill out the Scholarship Section in the application; however, please know that funding may likely not be available after the lottery close date.
People of Color and Young Adult applicants (whether scholarship applicants or not) are given high priority. Applicants who were on the waiting list the last two years in a row and did not get into our month-long retreats will also be given a higher priority. All others will go into the lottery system and be selected at random.
After the lottery closes and selections have been made, lottery applicants will be notified by email of their status no later than the second week in October; please refrain from calling before this deadline. We will need this time to process all the applications, pull the lottery, and allocate scholarship funding. If you are selected in the lottery pull, you will be sent an email with a special link to register and pay your retreat fees online. If you end up on a waiting list, you will be notified of your position on the list.

Retreat Description:
The paradox of awareness is very profound and yet very simple. It can’t be described because it has no objective qualities and no limitation. Sometimes it comes naturally to the surface when we are fully in the present moment and no longer lost in thoughts or mental projections. Pure consciousness is neither high nor low, neither pleasant nor unpleasant, neither good nor bad.
Join us for this retreat where we will learn how to pay attention to this quality of awareness through formal and informal meditation. Once we know how to pay attention, it can be experienced in an instant – in all circumstances. When we reside in that liberated mind, we find the very thing we have been seeking all along.
The retreat includes silent sitting and walking periods with instructions and practice meetings with teachers, as well as daily dharma talks. This retreat is for both experienced as well as new students.
Financial assistance is available for all Spirit Rock residential retreats. Our scholarship rate is $40/night and available for all those with financial hardship with special funds allocated to People of Color (POC), folks with serious medical conditions, and young adults (age 18-26). Scholarship funding is offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. Scholarships are budgeted per retreat and because they are in high demand, can run out quickly. We encourage you to register for a retreat as close as possible to the registration opening date (lotteries are an exception).
A unique scholarship opportunity — the Hemera Contemplative Fellowship! If you are 18 years of age or older with a commitment to service — serving others through your profession — you should consider reviewing the eligibility for this Fellowship. In general, this Fellowship is for those who are full-time in the listed eligible professions and are new to silent residential retreat practice. Follow this link for more detailed information: Hemera Contemplative Fellowships. ONE scholarship allowed per person, per calendar year.

Jill White Lindsay
Jill White Lindsay
Originally starting her career as a high school biology teacher, Jill shifted her presence from the classroom to the yoga studio. After a bout with cancer, Jill realized the yoga she’d been practicing could help with pain management, mood regulation, and overall strength and wellbeing. Yoga became an anchor in her life, and her passion for yoga blossomed as her drive to teach persisted. Jill’s focus in her classes is to cultivate a healing environment and empower students to become more connected with their bodies and minds from a kind, compassionate, and humorous perspective. After receiving her 200-hour training from the White Lotus foundation in Santa Barbara with Ganga White and Tracy Rich, Jill expanded her discipline to teach therapeutic yoga. Her teaching style is informed by Harvey Deutch and received both her 100 and 50 hour advanced training under his mentor ship and still works with him in his physical therapy clinic in San Francisco. Jill is currently enrolled in an 800 training to become a certified yoga therapist. Therapeutic yoga is a process of meeting the yogi where they are, of empowering individuals by helping increase self-awareness and learning how to work within one’s own strengths and limitations. The goals of this practice can include reducing or eliminating symptoms that cause suffering while improving foundation and function. But therapeutic yoga is not just for the ‘mature’ or injured, it is a practice every body can benefit from by going deep in a safe and healing way.
