RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
The Buddha’s liberating teachings on the four divine sanctuaries (brahmavihāra) include meditations on universal friendliness (mettā), compassion (karuṇā), altruistic joy (muditā), and equanimity (upekkhā). Aimed at purifying our hearts and developing concentration (samādhi), these divine sanctuaries aid our ability to both find inner peace and powerfully engage with the world. This silent retreat will deepen our understanding of selfless love and its role in ending suffering. This retreat is silent except for teacher-led Q&A, small groups, or other practice meetings.
Retreatants are encouraged to combine this 8-night lovingkindness retreat with the following 8-night Insight Meditation retreat, to further develop concentration, purify the heart, and learn to combine these two forms of Buddhist meditation. The combination of these two retreats give a unique opportunity to blend the two wings of Buddhist wisdom based in love and emptiness.
NEW! IMPORTANT CHANGE in 2023 – the previously known July Insight retreat (with Joseph Goldstein and Team) will be held as an online only retreat. The Metta and Insight retreats have been pushed to August and are NOT a lottery-style registration for 2023. These retreats will return to July in 2024.
Unique Opportunity for a 16-night Retreat – merging lovingkindness meditation with insight practices!
Prerequisite for 16-night Retreat: Completion of one (or more) 9-night (or longer) silent, residential, insight meditation retreat(s). You will be required to list retreat experience during the registration process: the teachers’ names, dates, location/center, length (# of nights), and style of the retreat(s). Online retreats do not meet this prerequisite.
If you would like a longer retreat period (16 nights), you could attend BOTH the Summer Lovingkindness Retreat (August 13-21) and the Summer Insight (August 21-29) retreats back-to-back. We will reserve 50 spaces for this extended retreat opportunity. These spaces sell out quickly so register by April 13, 2023, to have the best chance of getting an extended retreat spot. The first 50 eligible applicants will be sent a link to register early for the Summer Insight retreat.
Registrations for both retreats will be first-come, first-serve on separate days. Therefore, if you are interested in the 16-night retreat option, you will have to register and pay for EACH of the retreats separately. Receiving a scholarship for both retreats is not guaranteed. We will create a waiting list for the 16-night spaces when it fills and a scholarship waiting list when they are sold out.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Scholarship offerings: All scholarship rates require a minimum fee ($55/night). Scholarships are limited to TWO per calendar year for on-land retreats. And, while we are not able to offer “no one turned away”-type of scholarships for in-person retreats, they are still available for online offerings.
Room Occupancy Update*: We have double and single occupancy rooms. Many of our rooms are single occupancy (only 16 of 80 rooms are double occupancy). We offer a “guaranteed single room” rate; these rates are limited (16). This rate guarantees a single room while helping to support scholarships and all we do here at Spirit Rock. The remaining single rooms are not exclusive to the top end of the sliding scale; however, they are initially prioritized for those with serious medical needs.
*Subject to change depending upon COVID-19 situation.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
The emphasis in this retreat will be on continuity of awareness in all activities, stabilizing the mind, and cultivating insight. Combining relaxation with clarity, we will explore the liberating teachings of the Buddha, including the foundations of mindfulness, the radical nature of impermanence, and the cessation of craving.
Practitioners are encouraged to combine the Summer Insight Retreat with the Summer Lovingkindness (mettā) Retreat, although this is not required. For those attending both retreats, the teachers will guide and integrate the retreats as one offering. Those who attend the mettā retreat will have the option to continue with formal mettā as their primary practice through the second retreat. This retreat is silent except for teacher-led Q&A, small groups, or other practice meetings.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Open to: Self-identified LGBTQIA+
Description:
Taking refuge in the inherent goodness of our true nature, we deepen in awareness, lovingkindness, and wisdom. We explore what refuge can truly mean for us, both individually and in our collective circles. As wisdom and compassion grow and weave together, they lead toward a rich and fruitful harvest, naturally opening and nurturing our hearts and minds. Making room for spacious inquiry, we’ll practice traditional meditation instructions, combining the brahmavihāra practices with Dharma talks, seated and walking meditations, and group practice discussions with the teachers. This retreat supports all levels of practice and inclusivity for our LGBTQIA+, GNC, and non-binary communities.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Scholarship offerings: In returning to the land, we returned to our pre-pandemic scholarship options and policies. All scholarship rates require a minimum fee ($55/night). Scholarships are limited to TWO per calendar year for on-land retreats. And, while we are not able to offer “no one turned away”-type of scholarships for in-person retreats, they are still available for online offerings.
