RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
This is a traditional Insight Meditation (vipassanā) retreat with sitting and walking in silence, and regular meetings with teachers. Each day there will be systematic meditation instructions, Dharma talks, and movement practice. We will mark the turning of the year with a late evening sitting and simple ceremony on New Year’s Eve. In celebration of the New Year, our focus will be on cultivating loving awareness and embracing each moment as fresh and new. All are welcome.
This retreat is silent except for teacher-led Q&A, small groups, or other practice meetings.
IMPORTANT – Details on our current COVID Safety Protocols for In-person Retreats. Subject to change.
Financial Information:
Sliding Scale: $385-$3640; 7 nights including food and lodging.*
Please consider paying at the highest rate that you can afford: your generosity supports Spirit Rock, staff, and your fellow practitioners. Any amount offered above the Base rate is a tax deductible donation to Spirit Rock, and your generosity will enable and support the participation of others. Fees do not include dana for the teachers.
Supporter Rate (guaranteed single room) – $3640
Benefactor – $2870
Sustainer – $2205
BASE – $1435
Reduced Rate – $910
Mudita/Karuna Scholarship (for anyone who needs financial assistance, including fixed income folks) – $385
BIPOC Scholarship (for Black, Indigenous, and/or Persons of color) – $385
Young Adult Scholarship (for young adults age 18-26 years) – $385
*Fees DO NOT include a donation to the teacher(s)
Selection Details:
Applications are accepted between 08/07/23 – 08/28/23. All applications are assigned a random number. Together with the random number we are balancing many additional variables to create equity, diversity, inclusion, and access. Those factors include: scholarship needs & availability, affinity group “membership”, age, gender balance, and experienced or new practitioners. Applications received after the close date are automatically placed on the wait list (and will not be included in the first round of selections). Notification rounds can move quickly in the first few weeks following the first acceptances, so we recommend staying ready. You may be accepted sooner than you realize!
You will be notified about the selection results within two weeks of the application close date. If you have been offered a space, you will have two days to pay a deposit to accept/hold the space. If you don’t accept the space within this deadline, we will offer it to the next person in line.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Scholarship offerings: All scholarship rates require a minimum fee ($55/night). Scholarships are limited to TWO per calendar year for on-land retreats. And, while we are not able to offer “pay what you can”-type of scholarships for in-person retreats, they are still available for online offerings as space allows.
Room Occupancy Update*: We have double and single occupancy rooms. Many of our rooms are single occupancy (only 16 of 80 rooms are double occupancy). We offer a “guaranteed single room” rate and these will be limited (16). This rate guarantees a single room while helping to support scholarships and all we do here at Spirit Rock. The remaining single rooms are not exclusive to the top end of the sliding scale; however, they are initially prioritized for those with serious medical needs.
*Subject to change depending upon COVID-19 situation.

Description:
Change is normal and necessary, but often we are unprepared to manage it skillfully. Research shows that meeting change with mindfulness and having specific tools to navigate uncertainty allows us to experience well-being even when life is challenging.
Change naturally brings up concerns, fears, and questions that can lead to confusion, lack of motivation, or poor decisions. To help you effectively respond to these challenges, during this workshop participants will have the opportunity to:
- Use our “Journey through Change Map” to orient yourself in your change;
- Recognize mind habits that undermine you and learn practices to disengage from them;
- Identify your values and intentions so you have a basis for making wise decisions;
- Create a plan for navigating your change.
Expect a weekend full of dynamic inquiry and the opportunity to learn essential life skills for meeting your changes and transitions with authenticity, confidence, and clarity.
Your commitment to attend all sessions is important and required. If you are unable to attend any part of these sessions, we ask you to consider joining at another time when you can be fully present.

RETREAT DESCRIPTION:
February
An extended period of retreat offers the rare opportunity for sustained and dedicated practice. This retreat emphasizes quieting the mind, opening the heart, and developing profound clarity and depth of Insight practice. Instruction will follow the traditional four foundations of mindfulness, combined with training in lovingkindness and compassion, through a daily schedule of silent sitting, walking, Dharma talks, and practice meetings with teachers.
March
“The Still Heart of Awareness”
Awareness, or consciousness, is the very heart of sentient life, the faculty that reveals all the events of our experience. Yet in our dharma practice we may not have learned how to meditate directly on this fundamental aspect of our minds.
In this retreat we will explore the nature of awareness in three stages. We’ll begin by developing greater stability of mind through mindfulness of breathing. Next we’ll introduce a regular practice of lovingkindness, allowing the beautiful and responsive qualities of heart to unfold. Then, with these foundations, we’ll start to explore the nature of awareness, this mysterious capacity of knowing. These practices open the door to emptiness, profound understanding, and great freedom.
Special Note for 2024: When registering for the 2-Month retreat, please be aware that the March retreat will feature very different themes from the February retreat in the meditation instructions and talks, unlike in prior years. Please read the descriptions carefully for both months before registering. Participants in March will be expected to follow the instructions as offered for that retreat. If you are not interested, the teachers kindly ask that you not sign up for this retreat.

We will continue to accept applications on a rolling basis after the initial deadline of August 31st; applications received after this date will be put on a waiting list.
Scholarships:
We receive many more requests for scholarships than we have funding so we cannot guarantee you will receive scholarship funding. Scholarship funding is offered to anyone needing financial assistance to attend. Additional scholarship funding has been offered to support practitioners who self-identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or a Person of color (BIPOC). We have scholarship rates at $55 per night. For the month-long retreats only: Spirit Rock extends the upper age limit of the Young Adult scholarship rate to individuals 18-32 years of age. This special rate is also $55 per night. A limited number of these special YA rates will be available.
If you need scholarship funds to attend, once the application is available, please complete the Scholarship Section; funding may likely not be available later. Scholarship requests do not influence your acceptance.
PLEASE READ – Details on our current COVID Safety Protocols for In-person Retreats. These protocols may or may not change between now and the start of the retreats in 2024. Check this page regularly.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
This is a silent retreat designed especially for those relatively new to the practices of Insight Meditation (vipassanā). The retreat includes systematic instructions on vipassanā meditation—both stillness and moving—as well as lovingkindness practices, meetings with teachers, and evening talks highlighting the central teachings of the Buddha and their practical application to our lives.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Scholarship offerings: All scholarship rates require a minimum fee ($65/night). Scholarships are limited to TWO per calendar year for on-land retreats. And, while we are not able to offer “pay what you can”-type of scholarships for in-person retreats, they are still available for online offerings as space allows.
Hemera Fellowships for Residential Retreats – are you eligible and a first-time retreatant? Learn more details…
Room Occupancy: We have double and single occupancy rooms.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
This retreat offers a new style of Insight Meditation that employs the “Nine Bodies of Consciousness” map. The focus of this practice is on developing mindfulness of the felt sense of embodied experience. Accessing the felt sense allows you to directly experience the various capacities of consciousness, including intuitive awareness. This method of practice fosters the natural arising of insight.
This distinct teaching style will be unfamiliar to first-time “Nine Bodies Insight” practitioners, and the primary teaching method is two daily, detailed 45-60 minute guided meditations. Potential participants are strongly encouraged to listen to guided meditations ahead of time to experience this style of practice. Guided meditations from last year’s retreat can be found here.
This retreat will be held in noble silence except for the guided meditations, talks, and teacher-led practice support meetings. This retreat is not recommended for those experiencing acute grief or other strong mental or emotional challenges.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Scholarship offerings: All scholarship rates require a minimum fee ($60/night). Scholarships are limited to TWO per calendar year for on-land retreats. And, while we are not able to offer “pay what you can”-type of scholarships for in-person retreats, they are still available for online offerings as space allows.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
A fundamental aspect of establishing embodied mindfulness centers around contemplations of the elements. In the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta, the four elements of earth, water, fire, and air represent the four basic qualities of matter—solidity, liquidity, temperature, and motion.
The Buddha also gave instruction for knowing space as a fifth element. These five elements are universal and when we contemplate them in relation to the body, they may bring a cooling of the grasping mind and a profound realization of emptiness and fullness.
During this retreat, we will practice with the descriptive nature of each of the elements, which can be known through the felt sense, energetic sense, and intuitive knowing. We will contemplate the relationship they have with each other and their importance in establishing mindfulness and concentration, while allowing them to support the kind of non-conceptual knowing from which insights naturally arise. This retreat Includes guided and silent meditations, mindful movement, and practice meetings with teachers.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
The Buddha’s liberating teachings on the four divine sanctuaries include meditations on universal friendliness, compassion, altruistic joy, and equanimity. Aimed at purifying our hearts and developing concentration, these divine sanctuaries aid our ability to both find inner peace and to powerfully engage with the world. This retreat will deepen our understanding of selfless love and how it ends suffering. Retreatants are encouraged to combine this Lovingkindness Retreat with the previous Elements Retreat to further develop concentration, purify the heart, and learn to integrate these two forms of Buddhist meditation.
Unique opportunity: If you would like a longer retreat period (18 nights), you could attend BOTH The Elements (August 11-18) and the Summer Lovingkindness (August 18-27) retreats back-to-back. We will reserve 50 spaces for this extended retreat opportunity. These spaces sell out quickly, so register as early as possible.
IMPORTANT NOTES:

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
The Buddha emphasized Samādhi practice as one aspect of the Eightfold Path. It can bring joy to your practice and lead to the skillful use of pleasure in the meditative process.
This retreat develops concentration through specific meditative practices that utilize the mind’s natural capacity to become collected and unified. The focus will be on both developing concentration and exploring the experience of a concentrated and contented mind as a natural, mysterious, and beneficial phenomena. Teachers will also give instructions for utilizing concentration during Insight practice.
The primary teaching method will be two daily guided meditations, each 45-60 minutes long. Participants are strongly encouraged to listen to guided meditations and a short talk by Phillip Moffitt explaining this naturally-arising approach to Samādhi practice. This retreat will be held in noble silence except for the guided meditations, talks, and teacher-led practice support meetings.
Prerequisite: Completion of at least two 7-night (or longer) or three 5-night silent residential Insight Meditation retreats (online retreats are not eligible) BEFORE registering.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Scholarship offerings: All scholarship rates require a minimum fee ($60/night). Scholarships are limited to TWO per calendar year for on-land retreats.
