RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
The Buddha encouraged maraṇasati practice—mindfulness of death—as part of living an awakened life. This practice supports our appreciation of the preciousness of human birth and the development of equanimity with the difficulties of existence. It helps us gain freedom from rigidity and clinging through a more expansive perspective of the inevitable and natural process of letting go. Maraṇasati matures our insight into impermanence and change, nourishing a skillful orientation to both life and death. In the retreat we will utilize the skills of loving awareness, compassion, and investigation in sitting meditation practice. In addition to silent practice, there will be one period of interactive contemplative inquiry each day to help metabolize our understanding of death.
This retreat is silent except for teacher-led Q&A, small groups, or other practice meetings.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Scholarship offerings: In returning to the land, we returned to our pre-pandemic scholarship options and policies. All scholarship rates require a minimum fee ($55/night). Scholarships are limited to TWO per calendar year for on-land retreats. And, while we are not able to offer “no one turned away”-type of scholarships for in-person retreats, they are still available for online offerings.
Hemera Fellowships – are you eligible? Learn more…
Room Occupancy Update*: Starting March 27, 2022, we returned to double and single occupancy rooms. Many of our rooms are single occupancy (only 16 of 80 rooms are double occupancy). We have also returned to offering a “guaranteed single room” rate; these rates are limited (16). This rate guarantees a single room while helping to support scholarships and all we do here at Spirit Rock. The remaining single rooms are not exclusive to the top end of the sliding scale; however, they are initially prioritized for those with serious medical needs.
*Subject to change depending upon COVID-19 situation.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Open to: Self-identified LGBTQIA+
Description:
Taking refuge in the inherent goodness of our true nature, we deepen in awareness, lovingkindness, and wisdom. We explore what refuge can truly mean for us, both individually and in our collective circles. As wisdom and compassion grow and weave together, they lead toward a rich and fruitful harvest, naturally opening and nurturing our hearts and minds. Making room for spacious inquiry, we’ll practice traditional meditation instructions, combining the brahmavihāra practices with Dharma talks, seated and walking meditations, and group practice discussions with the teachers. This retreat supports all levels of practice and inclusivity for our LGBTQIA+, GNC, and non-binary communities.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
Equanimity is a crown jewel of Buddhist practice, the unshakable balance of mind-heart born of the perfection of wisdom and love. It is neither aloof nor cool, as mistakenly imagined, but imbues the heart with tremendous stability and caring presence to neither push away nor drown in experience. Equanimity is the fourth and final brahmavihāra (heavenly dwelling), imbuing lovingkindness, compassion, and vicarious joy with balance. As the seventh factor of awakening, its development is needed for advancing in the path. It guards the mind-heart in the midst of the eight worldly winds of gain/loss, fame/disrepute, pleasure/pain, and praise/blame, which afflict our human lives at one time or another. Equanimity is such a rich and deep teaching that the Visuddhimagga (Path of Purification), teaches ten different types of equanimity. Cultivating equanimity is paramount for a heart-mind in balance, peace, and happiness at every stage of our practice.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
This silent retreat will focus on cultivating the quality of lovingkindness (mettā in Pāli), infusing our hearts, minds, and bodies with a strong, caring wisdom. Awareness as developed through mindfulness practice leads to clarity, insight, and understanding. Lovingkindness practices open the heart, allow a kind embrace of ourselves, and connect us intimately with all of life. The fusion of these qualities helps us to respond more compassionately to the challenges that we encounter in ourselves and in the world.
Qigong is a practice of aligning breath, movement, and awareness for exercise, healing, and meditation. Qigong perfectly complements traditional sitting meditation practice and has a long and well-established connection to contemplative traditions. On this retreat the lovingkindness practices will be supported by periods of guided instruction as well as Qigong, meditation, and regular meetings with the teachers. All are welcome.
This retreat is silent except for teacher-led Q&A, small groups, or other practice meetings.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
When we open to the reciprocity of forgiveness, we also enter into an awareness practice that presences understanding, wisdom, and compassion. The complexities of conditioned experience often compel us to defend rather than open our hearts. Forgiveness practice can be the medicine we need to lessen the tight grip of past trauma, grief, fear, anger, judgment, and wounds on ourselves and others. The courage to witness what we hold fast to has the potential to lead us on a journey towards liberation and true freedom.
Join us in exploring how cultivating the spirit of forgiveness, as a heart practice, allows for a reclaiming of our true loving nature. We will explore the practices of forgiveness and letting go, with the primary support of mindfulness, kindness, compassion, equanimity, and gratitude.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
Our path of practice leads to a destination: peace. Can we engage with practice such that our attitude along the path embodies the qualities of the destination? Can we approach every moment of awareness with ease, so that we are continuously cultivating goodwill and release? Can we avoid the pitfall of the practice becoming a struggle, or worse, a grim duty? Can we mindfully nourish our minds and hearts with the wholesome happiness available on the path?
We will explore integrating attitudes of peace, ease, release, friendliness, and well-being into the fabric of every moment on and off the cushion, in service of awakening for the sake of all beings and ourselves.

Hemera Fellowships for Residential Retreats – are you eligible and a first-time retreatant? Learn more details…
Room Occupancy*: We have double and single occupancy rooms. Many of our rooms are single occupancy (only 16 of 80 rooms are double occupancy). We offer a “guaranteed single room” rate and these will be limited (16).

Description:
Mettā, or lovingkindness practice, is the cultivation of the intention of benevolence as the orientation of our heart and mind. It is also a path to wisdom. Through meditation, which is practiced steadfastly on retreat, we develop our capacity for mettā in order for it to manifest in an ongoing way in our daily lives.
In this retreat, we will learn the formal practice of mettā along with its companion practices of compassion, joy, and equanimity. All four of these practices—known as the brahmavihāras or divine abodes—strengthen self-confidence, self-acceptance, and steadiness of mind and heart, while revealing our fundamental disposition toward kindness. We will be joined on one day of the retreat by Sylvia Boorstein, a beloved long-time teacher of mettā.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
Insight Meditation is a simple and direct practice based on moment-to-moment awareness, a technique that opens the heart and clears the mind. This retreat offers an opportunity to practice continuous mindfulness in silence throughout the day, in both sitting and walking meditation. In the silence, we are freed from much of the daily barrage of stimulus that draws our attention outward, letting us delve deeply inward. Learning to be aware of our experience from a place of equanimity allows us to see more clearly, such that compassion and wisdom can arise.
This retreat is designed for beginners and experienced practitioners alike and will include meditation instruction, Dharma talks, chanting, and discussion time with the teachers.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
When the late Burmese master Mingun Sayādaw (U Nārada) was a young monk looking for a true teacher, he was told of a mountain hermit who was reported to be fully enlightened. When he asked this monk how he should practice, the monk replied, “Why are you searching outside of the Master’s word?” He went on to say that the direct path—the foundations of mindfulness—was given by the Buddha for those seeking liberation. Mingun Sayādaw followed these instructions with great faith and diligence and realized for himself the path and its fruit.
Mindfulness based in the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta (“The Discourse on the Foundations of Mindfulness”) is the heart of Insight Meditation practice. In this retreat we will follow the “words of the master” and the example of the great teachers of our tradition in practicing the way of mindfulness, which is always here and now and offers each of us a direct path to liberation.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Scholarship offerings: All scholarship rates require a minimum fee ($55/night). Scholarships are limited to TWO per calendar year for on-land retreats. And, while we are not able to offer “pay what you can”-type of scholarships for in-person retreats, they are still available for online offerings as space allows.
