Description:
In this 21st offering of Poetry Day, our usual sitting and walking practices will be informed by periods of reading poetry to each other. Each poem is carefully selected by Phillip Moffitt with an eye toward selections that point us to dharma insights.
Poems of this nature comfort us and inspire us to take our meditation understandings into our daily life such that we see the world through dharma eyes and respond from the dharma heart. This is a day of fun and lightheartedness and if you haven’t ever read a poem in front of others, don’t miss this opportunity to free your voice and find a new form of expression.
Tentative Schedule:
9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Morning Session
12:30 – 2:00 p.m. Lunch Break
2:00 – 4:30 p.m. Afternoon Session
All are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.

Description: Many of us carry old and new wounds related to our addictive behavior. Over time, uncared for, these wounds become triggers for more unhealthy thoughts and actions.
On this daylong retreat we will focus on bringing lovingkindness and compassion to the addictive wounds of the past and present. We will look at how our addictive behavior tried to cover our wounds and learn to be more compassionate with our own pain. We discover that there is wisdom we can draw out of this compassionate looking.
Using mindfulness of the body, we apply somatic awareness to the living wounds. This opens us to healing painful emotional habits and patterns of thought through understanding and compassion.
All are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.

Description:
Change is normal and necessary, but often we are unprepared to manage it skillfully. Research shows that meeting change with mindfulness and having specific tools to navigate uncertainty allows us to experience well-being even when life is challenging.
Change naturally brings up concerns, fears, and questions that can lead to confusion, lack of motivation, or poor decisions. To help you effectively respond to these challenges, during this workshop you will have the opportunity to:
• Use our “Journey through Change Map” to orient yourself in your change.
• Recognize mind habits that undermine you and learn practices to disengage from them.
• Identify your values and intentions so you have a basis for making wise decisions.
• Create a plan for navigating your change.
Expect a weekend full of dynamic inquiry and the opportunity to learn essential life skills for meeting your changes and transitions with authenticity, confidence, and clarity.

This drop-in group explores the intersection of recovery with Buddhist Teachings and practices. We welcome all people who identify with any of the full range of addictions, from substances, to behaviors, to habitual thought and emotional patterns.
This is not a 12 Step group, but we look to ways that members of that community can support each other on the path of recovery. Each gathering begins with a period of guided meditation and new meditators are welcome. There is time for discussion about meditation practice and each month a recovery/dharma theme will be discussed.

Open to: Self-identified South Asian descent
The opportunity to retreat from our busy lives, to slow down, unplug, and allow the mind to settle and gather can be profoundly beneficial in allowing us to look more deeply within ourselves. Join us for a day of silent meditation practice in community with other self-identified folks of South Asian descent.* We will devote this day to the practice of loving awareness in noble silence, and offer guidance rooted in the Buddhadhamma—including instructions for sitting/stationary meditation, and walking/movement meditation. We will cycle between the two forms of meditation for the bulk of the day. Some opportunity for relational mindfulness practice in groups will take place at the beginning and end of the day.
* One way to define “South Asian” is as people who trace their ethnicities to one of the following places: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Myanmar/Burma, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Tibet.
All are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.

Description:
Throughout history, people have sought the heights of human potential—to become as wise, strong, happy, and loving as a person can be. Now, thanks to recent science, we’re finding how these remarkable ways of being are based on equally remarkable changes in our own nervous system. In this experiential workshop, we will explore how to strengthen the neural circuitry of deep contentment, lasting love, and profound inner peace.
No background in brain science or meditation is needed. In addition to the personal value of these practices, this material has practical implications and benefits for therapists and others in the helping professions.

Description: Thich Nhat Hanh said, “Compassion does not see the world’s pain and sorrow as other; it is shared and it is ours.” When you wince as you watch a child skin her knee, or when you witness a loved one’s intense grief, you know how visceral empathy can feel. When you give in to the urge to comfort the child or envelope your loved one in your arms, you are compassion in action.
We are wired for compassion. Not only does our heart quiver with empathy and compassion, but certain parts of our brain light up. Compassion in action is an antidote to our many fears, from eco-anxiety and racial injustice to sickness and loss. With compassion, we meet the world with shared vulnerability and humanness, feel wonder and connection to the earth and all beings, and find the energy to transform ourselves and do what is needed.

There is time for discussion about meditation practice and each month a recovery/dharma theme will be discussed.

Description:
Inquiry, or investigation, is one of the seven factors of awakening, a quality that both leads to and expresses awakening. Inquiry can be a crucial factor in our practice, leading to greater aliveness, energy, interest, and wisdom, yet we may still believe that meditation should be about “not thinking.” In practice, we just initially need to not be ruled by thinking—which makes it possible to then use thinking and questioning fruitfully in the process of inquiry.
We’ll explore five modes of inquiry:
(1) bringing inquiry into our mindfulness practice in several ways
(2) listening deeply, particularly through the body and emotions, when there are repetitive thoughts and narratives, as well as difficult experiences
(3) using a core teaching to guide one’s practice
(4) radical questioning
(5) uncovering and transforming limiting beliefs
The day will combine short talks, guided inquiry practices, and discussion.
All are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.

Description:
At times, Buddhist teachings and meditation practice may feel like an attempt to escape human life. Being born into this world can seem somehow wrong or undesirable. This can lead to a sense of mistrust in our bodies, our impulses, and in nature itself. But what if this path actually led to becoming more fully human, rather than escaping the human condition? What if liberation could be found through embracing our true nature as conscious beings, rather than taming it? With these concepts in mind, this daylong retreat will focus on the joy and beauty of birth, becoming, humanness, interconnection, and nature. Together, we will celebrate life.

Description: Amidst all the pains in the world and our own lives, how do we allow our hearts to be open and responsive? How do we stay true to our deepest intentions for how we wish to be in the world? The Buddha offered a path of practice to support finding peace within by cultivating an open and responsive heart and mind. In this half day of practice, we will cultivate Wise Intention: intentions of kindness, compassion, and non-clinging. The instructions will emphasize bringing forth a natural balance and ease in both our meditation and in the whole of our lives.

Health in our body and clarity in our meditation increases as energy flows more freely through the spine. In this daylong we’ll learn five simple Qigong movements that awaken energetic wholeness in the spine and the entire body. We will experience how awakening the spine through Qigong is a valuable support and complement to mindfulness meditation.
These Qigong practices release spinal stagnation and open a profound circulation of energy. This promotes health and wellbeing in body and mind. Qigong and meditation bring a bright wakefulness and a concentrated, embodied presence that help us discover who we are beyond our stories.

Description:
The Four Noble Truths are the Buddha’s first teaching, said to contain a summary of all of his teachings. Based on one of the oldest Theravāda texts, there is a rarely taught practice of utilizing the Four Noble Truths to attain twelve insights that bring freedom and well-being. These insights prescribe a radically different way for us, with all of our vulnerability and fear, to engage with life just as it is and to find joy even in the midst of suffering.
In this four day silent retreat, we will explore each of the Four Noble Truths in depth and learn how we can apply the insights of this teaching to our daily lives. The goal of this retreat is to discover how the Four Noble Truths become the Four “Ennobling” Truths. Each day will have periods of sitting and walking meditation along with Dharma talks, discussion, and Q&A.
All are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.

Description: The Buddha asked his students to deepen in awareness of six kinds of experience: sights, sounds, tastes, aromas, body sensations, and mental experiences such as inner images, sounds, concepts, and our inner voice. These are simple momentary experiences in which we can become lost and enchanted, around which we might forever seek an unreachable sense of safety or contentment.
By becoming mindful of our breath and body, of the pleasant and unpleasant nature of these six experiences, and of their impermanent, ever-changing nature, we wake up from being lost in an exhausting dream. In learning to be mindful of these six sense doors, we discover a trustworthy peace and freedom.

Description: For over 2500 years, the extraordinarily resilient Buddhist feminine has carried the Dharma. As Maya Angelou said, “Because equal rights, fair play, justice, are all like the air: we all have it, or none of us has it.” Buddhist women have overcome barriers of culture, class, race, religion, and gender by following the natural inclination of their hearts to find enlightenment through the Four Noble Truths.
Their stories have the potential to help us find our heart’s liberation in the midst of the pandemic, climate trauma, and protests to bring awareness to issues of race and systemic injustice in our society. Our intention in this daylong is to find joy and freedom through our lived experience embracing our stories. With compassion, we connect to our inner sources of strength, peace, and empowerment, which enable us to both accept and transform what is needed in ourselves and the world around us.
All are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.
