PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
This program is to be held entirely online and designed for meditators and Buddhist practitioners wishing to engage wholeheartedly in a deep exploration and practice of Dharma through the study and teaching of the Buddha’s “Noble Eightfold Path.” Using the classic Buddhist teachings of sīla, samādhi, and pañña (ethics, meditation, and wisdom), we will look at how we cultivate mindfulness, kindness, and balance given the inner stresses of modern life, and the outer challenges of social inequity and the pressure of climate change.
This will be a practical, experiential, and meditative program exploring the Buddha’s teachings on the eight limbs of the Dharma path: Wise Understanding, Wise Motivation, Wise Action, Wise Livelihood, Wise Communication, Wise Effort, Wise Mindfulness, and Wise Concentration. Through the support of these teachings we will inquire how to live and respond to life with awareness, wisdom, and compassion.
In this journey, we will create a vibrant learning community to study, meditate, and inquire into these key areas of Buddhist teaching and how to make these teachings practical and relevant in our current social milieu. Our meditation practice and what is happening around us politically, socially, and globally are not separate. As we explore the Eightfold Path teachings, we will apply what was taught 2600 years ago to what we live and experience in our contemporary lives.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Open to: Everyone
Description:
Through investigating our own direct experience in meditation and action, old patterns of holding and pushing away can begin to unravel. The freedom we seek is found by turning towards the truth of impermanence, and by embracing the limitations of this world with compassion and care.
This monastic retreat will be held in Noble Silence. There will be periods of guided and silent meditation, Dharma reflections, chanting and simple ritual, guided movement practice, Q&A, and group practice discussions.
This retreat is open to all genders.
PLEASE NOTE: Retreatants are encouraged to keep 8 Precepts for the entire length of this retreat. For those who choose not to keep the 6th Precept, a light supper will be available. This retreat may not be a good match if you are unable to meet the limited intake of food requirement.
The Eight Precepts:
1. Not intentionally killing or harming any living creatures.
2. Not stealing, or concerning oneself with the possessions of others.
3. Not engaging in sexual activity of any kind.
4. Not lying or using speech harmfully. (On retreat this precept is usually observed as Noble Silence–keeping the silence unless there is a practical necessity to speak.)
5. Not taking intoxicating drink or drugs.
6. Not eating after mid-day. (Optional)
7. Not seeking amusements or wearing special bodily adornment. (On retreat one dresses and acts in a modest and restrained manner.)
8. Not using sleep indulgently.
Registration Fee & Cancellation Policy:
A minimum $150 registration fee is required to reserve a space in this retreat. A retreat of this length would normally cost $1025. This registration fee is a discounted rate for this unique monastic retreat and covers a portion of the “value of the goods and services received” by attending this retreat. This discounted rate is not tax-deductible. You will have the opportunity at the end of the retreat to make additional offerings to Spirit Rock — offerings to Spirit Rock totaling more than $1025 are tax-deductible.
On the last day of the retreat, participants will be invited to offer dana or make offerings in two categories: support for the retreat teachers and support for Spirit Rock. The word “dana” means generosity and simply translates into a heartfelt donation. Your support offered to the teachers and to Spirit Rock will help us continue to offer this unique annual monastic retreat and everything we do here. To read more about the practice of dāna, go to Dāna: The Practice of Generosity.
Cancellation policy for this monastic retreat:
- Full refund = 4 weeks or more before the retreat (April 26)
- $150 cancellation fee = between 2-4 weeks before the retreat (April 27-May 10)
- No refunds = less than 2 weeks before the retreat (May 11)
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Room Occupancy Update*: We have returned to double and single occupancy rooms. Many of our rooms are single occupancy (only 16 of 80 rooms are double occupancy). We have also returned to offering a “guaranteed single room” rate; these rates are limited (16). This rate guarantees a single room while helping to support scholarships and all we do here at Spirit Rock. The remaining single rooms are not exclusive to the top end of the sliding scale; however, they are initially prioritized for those with serious medical needs.
*Subject to change depending upon COVID-19 situation.

Description:
The Buddha advised us to overcome unhealthy states and develop states of true well-being such as gratitude, kindness, and compassion, and he encouraged us to deepen these beautiful states whenever possible. A profound support in doing this is to connect with the unnameable mystery from which all states emanate–what Ven. Ajahn Sumedho called “The Shining through of the Divine.” In this non-residential practice retreat we will focus on cultivating states of well-being, and rather than taking ownership of them, connecting to the source within us from which they arise. As they shine through, they become a gift to everyone in our lives.
This retreat is for practitioners who want to deepen their meditation practice through heartfelt connection to our natural goodness, well-being, and joy. It includes periods of sitting and walking meditation with instructions, practice-oriented talks, and practice discussions with the teachers.
On-Land space is limited due to COVID protocols in place, please register for the In-person event only if you can join us on the land. If you can only join us remotely online, please register for the Online version and you can participate by Zoom or watch the program later.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
Like the Buddha, people for millennia have sought refuge, clarity, and wisdom in nature. On this silent, outdoor retreat in the serenity and beauty of the hills and meadows at Spirit Rock, we explore potent awareness and sensory-based meditations that open us to insight, interconnection, and peace.
On this retreat, we will cultivate a receptive, embodied quality of attention. This awareness supports learning from nature’s teachings on impermanence, the illusion of our separateness, and the interdependence of all life. We will also explore how nature evokes not only profound insight but also brings forth the capacity for resilience and inspired action in these ecologically-challenging times.
There will be nature-based sitting and walking practice, Dharma talks, and group meetings, as well as time to explore the beauty of nature with contemplative presence both alone and in community. Be prepared for unexpected delight, mystery, silence, and illumination.
This retreat is silent except for teacher-led Q&A, small groups, or other practice meetings.
Please note: During much of this retreat we will practice together outside in the company of the natural world. There will be an option of moving indoors if inclement weather should be present. Early morning and late evening practices will mostly be indoors (unless you choose to sit outdoors).
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Scholarship offerings: In returning to the land, we returned to our pre-pandemic scholarship options and policies. All scholarship rates require a minimum fee ($55/night). Scholarships are limited to TWO per calendar year for on-land retreats. And, while we are not able to offer “no one turned away”-type of scholarships for in-person retreats, they are still available for online offerings.
Hemera Fellowships – are you eligible? Learn more…

Learn more…
Room Occupancy Update*: Starting on March 27, 2022, we returned to double and single occupancy rooms.

Please Note: This retreat is offered online only. We invite you to try this creative form of practice as we take care of one another and respond skillfully to COVID-19.
Description:
People under the grip of greed, hatred, and delusion do “evil” things. The Buddha himself had to contend with deeply wounded people causing terrible harm, including a famous serial killer, a patricidal king, and his own cousin trying to murder him. Their stories reveal a powerful and nuanced Buddhist approach to crime and justice that reinforces the core teaching that harmful action is born of ignorance, and can always be met with compassion and forgiveness.
We will read about Aṇgulimālā the serial killer, Ajatasattu the patricide, Devadatta the traitor, and a group of monks lost in factionalism and toxic politics. Evil in the Buddhist world is personified by Māra the deceiver, who the Buddha meets on the eve of his liberation. In these stories we see the workings of karma (kamma), and a vision of restorative justice where even the worst evil-doer can eventually be fully liberated.
While beginners are welcome, this class may be most engaging for practitioners with some experience in meditation and Buddhist teachings. With extensive supplementary material, this class aims to make the discourses of the Buddha an accessible, inspiring support for practice.
Please Note: Though the classes in the series will build on each other, attendance at all classes is not required.
All are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.

Description:
The Buddhist holiday of Vesak (Pāli: Visākha Pūjā) celebrates the birth, liberation, and death of the Buddha. Siddhattha Gotama of the Sakyan clan attained liberation at the age of 35, taught for 45 years, and died at the age of 80. The full moon of June is dedicated to the celebration of this extraordinary human being. Traditional rituals include offering flowers, incense, and candlelight, and the devotional practices of chanting and bowing.
Come together to celebrate the Buddha and express our gratitude for the gifts this tradition has brought to our lives and the world. We will share simple chants in Pāli and English, stories of the Buddha’s life, and meditations to help us connect with our love for this path and the teacher who brought it into the world. We will also explore how to practice the Buddhist holidays in the context of Insight Meditation and global Dharma culture.

Qigong and meditation woven together uplift the spirit, enhance physical and emotional health, and awaken consciousness.
Master Mingtong Gu will guide us in simple movements and the practice of Sound Healing to awaken our physical, mental, and emotional bodies, and our consciousness. The Dharma & Recovery group explores the intersection of recovery with Buddhist teachings and practices. We welcome all people who identify with any of the full range of addictions, from substances, to behaviors, to habitual thought and emotional patterns.
This is not a 12-Step group, but we look to ways that members of the community can support each other on the path of recovery. Each gathering begins with a period of guided meditation, and new meditators are welcome. There is time for discussion about meditation practice and a recovery/Dharma theme each month.
Online: We are offering this program online via Zoom for you to join us remotely.

Description:
Self-compassion involves treating ourselves kindly, like we would a good friend we care about. It provides support when times are tough so that we are more emotionally resilient. It motivates us to make needed changes in our lives not because we’re worthless or inadequate, but because we care about ourselves.
During this weekend retreat, you will practice simple tools for responding compassionately in daily life. You will learn about research demonstrating the benefits of self-compassion. Through experiential exercises, you will gain practical skills so that you can stop being so hard on yourself, handle difficult emotions with greater ease, and motivate yourself with kindness rather than criticism. Practices will also be introduced to help ease stress for caregivers. This weekend retreat is relevant for the general public as well as to practicing mental health professionals.
All are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
Mindfulness offers us tools to develop our capacity to pay attention, regulate emotions, and cultivate states of lovingkindness, compassion, and even-mindedness. Mindfulness can be practiced in a range from focused attention to wide open, spacious, natural awareness. Over time one can access states of profound well-being in both silent meditation and everyday life.
In this retreat we will practice mindfulness through sitting and walking meditation, as well as through lectures and the opportunity to meet with teachers who will guide our practice. While rooted in the Buddhist practice of mindfulness, this retreat will focus on the practical applications of mindfulness and the range of ways to practice it. It is open to people of all backgrounds and experience, especially those interested in secular mindfulness.
This retreat is silent except for teacher-led Q&A, small groups, or other practice meetings.
This program offers 11 CE credits for $110 for psychologists, and California licensed MFTs, LCSWs, LEPs, LPCCs, nurses, and chiropractors.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Scholarship offerings: All scholarship rates require a minimum fee ($55/night). Scholarships are limited to TWO per calendar year for on-land retreats. The exception is the Toni Ko Scholarship which is a one time, limited award. And, while we are not able to offer “pay what you can”-type of scholarships for in-person retreats, they are still available for online offerings as space allows.
Hemera Fellowships for Residential Retreats – are you eligible and a first-time retreatant? Learn more details…
Room Occupancy Update*: We have returned to double and single occupancy rooms. Many of our rooms are single occupancy (only 16 of 80 rooms are double occupancy). We have also returned to offering a “guaranteed single room” rate and these will be limited (16). This rate guarantees a single room while helping to support scholarships and all we do here at Spirit Rock. The remaining single rooms are not exclusive to the top end of the sliding scale; however, they are initially prioritized for those with serious medical needs.
*Subject to change depending upon COVID-19 situation.
IMPORTANT – Details on our current COVID Safety Protocols for In-person Retreats.

Description:
Our psyche is composed of both “heaven” and “earth.” Heaven represents the psyche’s transcendent expression, the pre-egocentric worldview of timelessness and transcendent identity. Earth represents the psyche’s dualistic, sensual, and conditioned aspects. Though we are conditioned to think of these “earth” aspects of the psyche as being negative, they are simply the counterpoint to the more transcendent and otherworldly aspects of our being.
Heaven and earth go together like your right and left hand, or like your two feet walking. No matter how we identify with or grasp at one of these aspects of our being, they are both part of us. Only when they come together in a single embrace do we experience a wholeness of being that is not held captive by either position. In this day with venerable teacher Adyashanti we will share meditation, teachings, and discussion that illuminates the embrace of heaven and earth.
On-Land space is limited due to COVID protocols in place, please register for the In-person event only if you can join us on the land. If you can only join us remotely online, please register for the Online version and you can participate by Zoom or watch the program later.

Description:

Room Occupancy Update*: Starting on March 27, 2022, we returned to double and single occupancy rooms.
IMPORTANT – Details on our current COVID Safety Protocols for In-person Retreats. Subject to change.
Selection Details:
Applications are accepted between February 7 – 28, 2023. All applications are assigned a random number. Together with the random number we are balancing many additional variables to create equity, diversity, inclusion, and access. Those factors include: scholarship needs & availability, affinity group “membership”, age, gender balance, and experienced or new practitioners. Applications received after the close date are automatically placed on the wait list (and will not be included in the first round of selections). Notification rounds can move quickly in the first few weeks following the first acceptances, so we recommend staying ready. You may be accepted sooner than you realize!
You will be notified about the selection results within two weeks of the application close date. If you have been offered a space, you will have two days to pay a deposit to accept/hold the space. If you don’t accept the space within this deadline, we will offer it to the next person in line.

Whether in our daily practice or daily lives, we are faced with obstacles that either hinder us or propel us forward. How do we identify these hindrances that arise in our lives and bring attention to their antidotes so that our hearts and minds remain fluid, open, and receptive to our awakening path? As a BIPOC community, we will explore the Buddha’s core teachings with mindful awareness as a vehicle to freedom of mind/heart. We will practice seated and walking meditation with instructions as well as Yoga and gentle movement, connect with teachers in small groups, and hear Dharma offerings. All levels of practice are welcome.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Prerequisite: Completion of at least three 7-night silent residential (in-person) Insight Meditation retreats (online retreats are not eligible).
Description:
The first half of this retreat will focus on the development of concentration (samādhi), the collectedness of mind that gives mental strength and stability. Concentration comes from cultivating a relaxed attention and ease of mind. It can bring joy to our practice and lead to the skillful use of pleasure in the meditative process. For practitioners at all levels of experience, it is a key ingredient in the deepening of meditative insight.
The second half of the retreat will build on the foundation of concentration to explore the nature of awareness, or consciousness, which is the heart of sentient life. Awareness is always with us, revealing the phenomena of our experience, yet we may not have learned how to use it as a focus in meditation. As we deepen our connection to and understanding of this mysterious capacity for knowing, it becomes a powerful pathway to inner freedom and liberation.
Learn more…

Description:
Inspire your imagination and unleash your stories in an immersive weekend of creative writing, meditation, mindful movement, and embodied energy practices. Like meditation, writing is a powerful way to wake up to the ordinary and extraordinary moments of our human lives. We’ll use embodied meditation in movement and stillness to settle our minds and open our hearts so we write from a deeper place. Through sharing our stories, we connect with ourselves, each other, and the heart of what it means to be alive.
This weekend retreat will include:
- Mindful movement to increase sensitivity, develop inner listening, and open pathways of creative energy.
- Guided meditation to settle the mind, open the heart, and connect with your deeper nature
- Writing prompts that awaken imagery, memory, and story
- Inspirational poems and quotes
- Practical teachings to make your writing more vivid and powerful
- Sharing your writing in small groups without judgment or critique
All are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.

Description:
Does “The Four Noble Truths” just seems like another list to memorize?
What are “truths”, especially when contemplating: How did we learned them? How have they hurt and harmed us? How can we transform the impacts of this to realize our inherent wholeness?
Join us and explore how the reframed “Engaged Four Noble Truths” can reflect our contemporary, multi-dimensional, lived experiences as BIPOCs. Throughout this daylong retreat, there will be meditative, reflective, and interactive exercises, which will support us to see how these seemingly passive “truths” can be more active and meaningful. We’ll expand their traditional framing to see how they also support an engaged practice, enlivening us with agency.
This daylong retreat of healing is based on teachings from Rev. Liên Shutt’s upcoming book, Home is Here: Practicing Antiracism with the Engaged Eightfold Path.
Open to: Self-identified BIPOC community. No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.

Description:
Lama Tsultrim Allione brings an 11th-century Tibetan woman’s practice to the West for the first time with this accessible and effective five-step approach for dealing with negative emotions, depression, anxiety, addiction, fears, illness, and any self-defeating patterns that block us. In the process the energy tied up in our demons transforms into an accessible ally.
Now the subject of several promising scientific studies, Feeding Your Demons® was distilled by Lama Tsultrim from the teachings and practice of the Tibetan yogini Machig Labdrön. This practice has benefited thousands worldwide, with practitioners from every walk of life on five continents, and can be a meaningful tool for anybody, regardless of religious affiliation or personal philosophy.

The factors include: age, gender, scholarship needs & availability, affinity group participation, and stage of practice (new to experienced). Applications received after the close date are automatically placed on the wait list. Notification rounds can move quickly in the first few weeks applications are open, so we recommend staying ready. You may be accepted sooner than you realize!
You will be notified about the selection results no later than April 20, 2023. If you have been offered a space, you will have three days to pay a deposit to accept/hold the space. If you don’t accept the space within this deadline, we will offer it to the next family in line.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Open To: Young Adults ages 18-32 years
Description:
Come practice silent mindfulness and Insight Meditation for a week in a group of your peers. Give yourself a break from constant overstimulation and external demands as we create a supportive space for cultivating greater inner calm, spaciousness, and presence.
We will honor each person’s experience through radical self-awareness and deeper embodiment, exploring the ancient practices of guided and silent sitting, walking, heart meditations, movement, practice meetings with teachers, and Dharma talks. Over the course of the week, we will extend these practices until the entire day is one of steady, continuous awareness.
On the last day of the retreat we practice coming in and out of silence to learn conscious connection with the community around us. This is a fully silent retreat, and you will be asked to turn off and put away all electronic devices.
This retreat is silent except for teacher-led Q&A, small groups, or other practice meetings.
Learn more…
Room Occupancy Update*: Starting on March 27, 2022, we returned to double and single occupancy rooms.
IMPORTANT – Details on our current COVID Safety Protocols for In-person Retreats.
