PROGRAM PREREQUISITES
A minimum of 50 nights of silent vipassanā, and/or mettā residential retreats. (Daylongs or non-residential retreats do not count towards the prerequisites.)
PROGRAM DETAILS
“This is peaceful, this is excellent, namely the stilling of all formations, the relinquishing of all attachments, the destruction of craving, dispassion, cessation, Nibbāna.” (MN 64.9)
LEAP is intended for experienced students of the Dhamma who want to explore the liberation teachings of the Buddha through practice, study, inquiry, and interactive exercises. It is a year-long program consisting of three retreats and is intended for those who have completed programs like Spirit Rock’s Dedicated Practitioners Program (DPP), Community Dharma Leader Program (CDL), Heavenly Messengers (HM), or an equivalent. Alternatively, long time practitioners or people who have participated in an equivalent program offered by another Vipassana teacher or organization are also eligible to apply.
The purpose of this program is to bring to life the liberating teachings of the Buddha both on retreat and in our daily practice. The three LEAP retreats will focus more on silent, intensive practice than DPP or CDL, but each retreat will include regular interactive and study sessions.
Spirit Rock is excited to offer this program again. Our previous iterations found it to be a great support to the experienced students in our community. We hope that those of you who have done DPP or CDL or have other significant study and practice experience will join us!
PROGRAM COMPONENTS and REQUIREMENTS
- Attendance at all three 8-night retreats
- Attendance at monthly small regional group meetings (in-person and Zoom options)
- Ongoing meetings with study/practice partners
- Regular Zoom meetings with LEAP teachers
- Completion of monthly homework including readings, reflections, and meditation instructions
- Commit to maintaining both meditative and daily life practice

Ānanda asked the Buddha, “Is it true, Lord, that noble friends are half of the holy life?” The Buddha responded, “No, Ānanda, noble friends are the whole of the holy life.”
Sharon became Sylvia’s teacher in 1985 and in time they became teaching colleagues as well as good friends. In this three-part series, Sharon and Sylvia will talk about how Dharma teaching has changed in the West as it has evolved, how the culture of the West has been changed by the Dharma, and perhaps most importantly, how each of them feels they have been changed by it.
Each two hour session will include Sharon and Sylvia in spontaneous dialogue, periods of guided meditation, and Q&A. Participants will be invited to submit questions in advance of the sessions and online during the sessions to establish a sense of inclusivity for saṅgha near and far.

DESCRIPTION:
We’ve all experienced the Buddha’s first noble truth in these past few years: there is suffering. To engage skillfully with this truth, we can draw on an accessible framework for cultivating the qualities of the heart that lead to liberation.
The 10 Perfections or Attainments of the Heart, known as the pāramīs, are a map for recovery and the creation of a culture of belonging and wisdom. They are qualities for navigating life, not just guidelines for meditation, and are said to be what the Buddha was cultivating in earlier lifetimes as he slowly developed into one who could awaken fully and show others the way to freedom.
In this program, we’ll be practicing and exploring the pāramīs both on and off the cushion, with a focus on how we embody and live these teachings within a community of belonging, and sustained dedication to collective liberation.
PROGRAM INCLUDES:
• Format: Online
• Teachings: Monthly (12) large group sessions (recorded)
• Community support: Monthly (12), self-organized “Practice Pods” (home groups); Required, each group will determine a time that works for all members.

Description:
The practice of calming and collecting the mind (Pāli: samādhi) is a necessary precursor to insight practice (vipassanā). Historically in the West, the primary concentration method taught to practitioners has been mindfulness of breathing. Yet there are many concentration objects in the Theravāda tradition that are actively practiced in monasteries in Asia and are espoused in the ancient practice manual The Path of Purification (Visuddhimagga). Among these practices are the ten kasiṇas, or visualization objects.
The practice of the white kasiṇa is foremost among these ten, as it imbues the mind-heart with particular qualities of rest, peace, and delight. Furthermore, the white kasiṇa corresponds to lovingkindness (mettā), sharing the many expansive qualities of mettā without the relational aspect of other beings. Practitioners of all levels are welcome at this accessible introduction to a rarely-taught meditation method.

Description:
Our mind is naturally creative—it foresees and remembers, dreams and perceives. What we imagine can lead us toward or away from liberation. Imagination creates a physiological response which can heal or render defeat, explore ideas and possibilities, as well as sense how someone else might feel, which seeds empathy in the heart. What seem like simple perceptions are often imagined, and our lives are shaped by how we create a response to each moment.
During each daylong we’ll explore mindfulness, open awareness, visualization, breath, and subtle body practices to become more intimate with the movement of imagination, and incline the mind toward what is helpful and away from harmful inner and outer habits. All of our practices will be offered seated or lying down, and some in optional restorative yoga postures.

Description:
Having the time, money, and circumstances that allow for going on a meditation retreat is not a privilege that everyone shares, let alone the ability to live as a monastic. Many of us have commitments to care for children, elders or others, or to our work in the world. Is awakening only for people living a monastic or semi-monastic life, or can we find just as much depth through the life of a householder? Together, we will explore the possibilities for profound insight to be found in taking out the trash, writing emails, and sleepless nights of childcare. Through talks, guided meditations, and relational practices, this retreat will highlight and celebrate the multitude of ways we can awaken in daily life.
All are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.

Darkness—in nature and in consciousness—is not the absence of light, but a vital source of restoration, clear seeing, and growth. All light comes from darkness, including insight, creativity and vision. As we navigate internal and external divisiveness and global uncertainty, there is a call for each of us to re-learn how to meet darkness and the unknown with reverence, respect, curiosity, and receptivity so we can respond to the cries of the world with embodied presence and fierce love.
During this restorative, experiential weekend, we will travel down into our bodies, beyond the realm of concepts and ideas, to discover darkness as a teacher of love and possibility, and deepen into practices that nourish the imagination, and nurture the heart. Together we will explore the fullness and mystery of darkness, our sacred source, and enrich our relationships—with ourselves, with each other, and with the earth.

Description:
Breathing well is both vital to our health and forms the foundation of the path of awakening. This daylong retreat will combine Dharma, meditation, somatic movement, and Yoga āsana for an embodied experience of the Buddha’s teachings on mindfulness of breathing, or ānāpāṇasati. Exquisitely detailed in the Ānāpāṇasati Sutta, mindfulness of breathing is a profound process leading to the cultivation of calm embodied presence, joy, insight, and ultimately awakening. This practice is highly accessible and easily integrated into daily life.
Each movement session will begin with supine somatic movements to unwind tension and facilitate expansive breathing, progressing into a grounding and energizing sequence of gentle Yoga āsanas. Our practices will focus on ease and enjoyment to balance and nourish the body, and rejuvenate the mind and heart. Participants will be empowered to develop and deepen their own practice. All abilities and levels of experience are welcome.
All are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.

Description:
In this program, we will be exploring what I call the “boundless dimensions.” They can also be called the formless dimensions or the dimensions of omnipresence. What this means is that we’re going beyond the dimension of working with the individual soul. By individual soul I mean our individual consciousness—that which forms our subjectivity and is the carrier and site of all of our experiences and perceptions. It is consciousness located in space and time.
To go beyond the individual soul requires some fundamental shifts in perception, and it’s worth saying from the outset that the teaching on this can be difficult to grasp at first. Human language evolved to express the viewpoint of human beings as individuals, and using that language to describe a completely different perception of reality has its limitations.
All are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.

Description:
It is possible to live with a relaxed and natural awareness in everything you do. The Buddha stated that sati—mindfulness or awareness—is a complete path to liberation. Mindful awareness cultivates the ability to be present with all experience with clarity, insight, and freedom. It is the foundation for wisdom, compassion, and awakening.
In this silent meditation retreat we explore the innate quality of awareness: what it is, how to recognize it, and how to cultivate and abide within it. We investigate how continuity of mindfulness practice supports a depth and stability of awareness, and inquire into what interferes with fully stabilizing in awareness both in meditation and in ordinary activity. As mindfulness grows, we see how this capacity for awareness is available in every moment. The retreat includes periods of sitting and walking meditation, Dharma talks, inquiry, and discussion.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
Wisdom practices are commonly distinguished from practices of love and compassion. However, Buddhist psychology suggests a powerful connection between awareness and love. In Insight Meditation, we practice resting, looking deeply, knowing moment-by-moment what it’s like to be human. Some of us are hesitant to look because we’re concerned about what we’ll find. But our practice shows us that the more deeply we look into experience, the more reason we have to love.
As attention stabilizes, we begin to sense the poignancy of our wish to be happy. Seeing this, we care about our struggles and cherish our joy in a new way. In turn, this love informs how we engage with the world.
This retreat will offer instructions in mindfulness meditation, as well as in lovingkindness practice. Throughout the retreat there are Dharma talks and meetings with teachers to support you in your practice. All are welcome.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Scholarship offerings: In returning to the land, we returned to our pre-pandemic scholarship options and policies. All scholarship rates require a minimum fee ($55/night). Scholarships are limited to TWO per calendar year for on-land retreats. And, while we are not able to offer “no one turned away”-type of scholarships for in-person retreats, they are still available for online offerings.
Room Occupancy Update*: Starting on March 27, 2022, we returned to double occupancy rooms. Many of our rooms are single occupancy (only 16 of 80 rooms are double occupancy). We also returned to offering a “guaranteed single room” rate and these will be limited (16). This rate guarantees a single room while helping to support scholarships and all we do here at Spirit Rock. The remaining single rooms are not exclusive to the top end of the sliding scale; however, they are initially prioritized for those with serious medical needs.
*Subject to change depending upon COVID-19 situation.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
In this restorative silent retreat, we’ll weave together practices from the Yoga and Dharma traditions to help you cultivate and embody the heart qualities known as the brahmavihāras: the “divine abodes” of kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. The spacious schedule is designed to support mindful presence within the flow of movement and stillness, nourishing your spirit and helping you reconnect with what matters most. There will be time to rest, be in nature, and find the natural rhythms of your own practice. Each day includes guided practice sessions that weave together a gentle, mindful Yoga session, seated meditation instructions, and Dharma reflections, as well as silent seated and walking meditation, open time for self-guided movement practice, and small group meetings with a teacher.

Description:
In these times of great change, we are called to address old patterns of limitation, and learn to open to as-yet unknown possibilities. Impermanence is one of the three supreme Dharma gates that lead to freedom. When we align with the truth of the way things are, we experience clarity, even in the midst of the most challenging conditions. Learning to live from a place of openness to change, we ourselves are changed, and we deepen in peace and equanimity.
On-Land space is limited due to COVID protocols in place, please register here only if you can join us on the land. If you can only join us remotely online, please register for the Online version and you can participate by Zoom or watch the program later.

RETREAT TO BE HELD ON THE LAND!
Description:
Concentration and insight are like two wings of a bird: each is essential for traversing the path of practice and liberation. Without a concentrated mind, it is hard to see deeply into the nature of things—to arrive at the roots rather than flit around in the branches. Without turning this concentrated mind to clearly observe the nature of our own body, heart, and mind we do not touch the wisdom that transforms the way we live and love and relate to all of life. Please join us in following the Buddha’s invitation to “come and see” for yourself what is possible when we learn to move in the deep and clear waters of the heart.

Description:
“We run away because we’re afraid of suffering. The block of pain and sorrow in us feels overwhelming. Even if we have time, we don’t come home to ourselves. We try to keep ourselves constantly entertained—watching television or movies, socializing, or using alcohol or drugs—because we don’t want to experience that suffering all over again.” (Thich Nhat Hanh)
This class series is about coming home to ourselves, reclaiming our power by resolving trauma and reconnecting to our aliveness and agency. Through science-based somatic and mindfulness practices, we’ll explore ways to cultivate safety and kindness, build resilience, and balance inner and outer stressors. Developing tools to overcome habitual fight, flight, and freeze reactions, we reclaim our power and reconnect with inner strength, peace, and aliveness. With a focus on the profound challenges of eco-anxiety and responding to racial injustice, we cultivate the resilience and agency necessary for well-being and engaging in transformative action in our communities.
All are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.

Description:
Change is normal and necessary, but often we are unprepared to manage it skillfully. Research shows that meeting change with mindfulness and having specific tools to navigate uncertainty allows us to experience well-being even when life is challenging. Change naturally brings up concerns, fears, and questions that can lead to confusion, lack of motivation, or poor decisions. To help you effectively respond to these challenges, during this workshop you will have the opportunity to:
• Use our “Journey Through Change Map” to orient yourself in your change
• Recognize mind habits that undermine you and learn practices to disengage from them
• Identify your values and intentions so you have a basis for making wise decisions
• Create a plan for navigating your change
Expect a weekend full of dynamic inquiry and the opportunity to learn essential life skills for meeting your changes and transitions with authenticity, confidence, and clarity.
All are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.

Description: This Earth Day gathering will be a time to connect with each other in community to share our love and care for the Earth, feel any grief or other strong responses to the climate situation, and learn how to move through stuck places into inspiring action. A connection with community in a way that embraces the sorrows and the joys leads to a wholehearted commitment for wise stewardship of the Earth. With compassion and humility, we begin to understand our place as co-inhabitants, and take on the joyful responsibility to do our part to protect this planet and all the life it supports as an act of love.
We will enjoy presentations, meditation, and music, and connect with like-minded friends who celebrate the Earth by committing to be, as best we can, agents of healing for the planet and all living beings.
On-Land space is limited due to COVID protocols in place, please register here only if you can join us on the land. If you can only join us remotely online, please register for the Online version and you can participate by Zoom or watch the program later.

Application Selection Details for the On-Land Residential Retreat:
Applications are accepted between December 14, 2022 – January 10, 2023 (end of the day). Retreat fees are not collected at the time you submit your application. All applications are assigned a random number for the lottery selection process. The lottery-style selection process helps us balance many factors to create equity, diversity, inclusion, and access across our community of practitioners. The factors include: age, gender, scholarship needs & availability, affinity group participation, and stage of practice (new to experienced).
Applications received after the close date are automatically placed on the wait list (and will not be included in the first round of selections). Notification rounds can move quickly in the first few weeks following the first acceptances, so we recommend staying ready. You may be accepted sooner than you realize!
You will be notified about the selection results within two weeks of the application close date. If you are offered a space, you will have two days to pay a deposit to accept/hold the space. If you don’t accept the space within this deadline, we will offer it to the next person in line.
IMPORTANT NOTES for On-land Retreats:
Scholarship offerings for on land retreats: In returning to the land, we returned to our pre-pandemic scholarship options and policies. All scholarship rates require a minimum fee ($55/night). Scholarships are limited to TWO per calendar year for on-land retreats. And, while we are not able to offer “no one turned away”-type of scholarships for in-person retreats, they are still available for online offerings.
Room Occupancy Update**: We have returned to double and single occupancy rooms. Many of our rooms are single occupancy (only 16 of 80 rooms are double occupancy). We have also returned to offering a “guaranteed single room” rate; these rates are limited (16). This rate guarantees a single room while helping to support scholarships and all we do here at Spirit Rock. The remaining single rooms are not exclusive to the top end of the sliding scale; however, they are initially prioritized for those with serious medical needs.
**Subject to change depending upon COVID-19 situation.
IMPORTANT – Details on our current COVID Safety Protocols for In-person Retreats.
