Description:
The discourses of the Buddha, called suttas, are one of the world’s most majestic collections of spiritual teaching. They record many styles of teaching, from inspiring poetry to psychological guidance, social theory, and philosophical masterpieces that address the deepest human fears, hopes, and potential.
In this study and practice series we dive into the beauty and richness of the Buddha’s teachings, reading texts from the Pāli Canon, the body of ancient texts preserved by Theravāda Buddhist cultures in South and Southeast Asia, in accessible English translations.
You will hear the voice of the Buddha, building his community and laying out a path of practice that leads to liberation from all forms of suffering. You will find advice for the most stubborn challenges in meditation and ordinary life. And you will be invited to realize for yourself the profound liberation he called “the heartwood of the holy life.”
Please Note: Though the classes in the series will build on each other, attendance at all classes is not required.

Please Note: This retreat is offered online only. We invite you to try this creative form of practice as we take care of one another and respond skillfully to COVID-19.
Description:
There are certain facts of life that we cannot change, unavoidable “givens” of human life and especially of relationships:
1) Everything changes and ends,
2) Things do not always go according to plan,
3) Life is not always fair,
4) Pain is part of life,
5) People are not loving and loyal all the time.
We cannot find real contentment in our lives until we acknowledge and come to terms with these facts. This means giving up trying to control them. Once we begin to do that, we start to realize that these givens actually offer us profound opportunities for a
new honesty and realism in our lives.
We cultivate an “unconditional yes” to these conditions of existence, and we learn to open, accept, even embrace our predicaments without trying to control the outcomes. We begin to trust what happens as opportunities for practice of mindfulness and lovingkindness.
All are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.

Description:
Those who are familiar with the practice of mettā, or lovingkindness, know that it is one of four divine abidings of the heart according to the Buddha’s teachings. One way that this quality can be cultivated—as traditionally and so frequently taught—is through the recitation of phrases. However, without a deeper understanding or familiarity with the subtle expressions of mettā, or the alternate doorways into cultivating this profound and limitless quality, lovingkindness meditation can mislead us to binary thinking, as in: “I am loving and kind” or “I am not loving and kind.”
In our daylong together, we will explore the various doorways into cultivating mettā, as well as the spectrum in which it can come alive in our daily lives. All levels and experiences welcome.
All are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.

Description:

How can we find more clarity and stability during times of extraordinary change? How can we recover our sense of equilibrium when things get hard? Meditation provides a training ground to strengthen the internal basis from which we meet a changing world, and a laboratory to investigate how and why we get stuck.
In this daylong retreat, we’ll explore practices and perspectives from the Buddhist path that support us to meet the uncertainty of life with more confidence, grace, and insight. The day will include a combination of guided meditation, silent reflections, small group discussion, and large group Q&A. All are welcome, no prior experience required.

We will also explore how we internalize the judgments of our society in a number of ways, particularly related to race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. Attendees will have the option of regular follow-up sessions.

Description:
Gather your family together for fun, mindfulness, and connection in our online Family Weekend! Spirit Rock’s popular Family Retreat is moving online this summer, with three days of joyful sharing and Dharma practice. We hope you’ll join us!
We’ll gather online for three special days to explore the theme of friendship. As our world transforms with vaccines, changes to work and school, and more, mindfulness practice can be a wonderful resource. How do we navigate this big transition? Whether we feel anxious, exhausted, or overjoyed, can we treat our experience with care and mindfulness? Together, we’ll learn how we can be friends to ourselves, each other, and the world as we meet the ups and downs of this moment.
We are sensitive to screen time hours in this online format, especially for our younger family members and will provide programming that can be tailored to the needs of your family.
All are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds as space allows. For more information, please email Registration@spiritrock.org.
