As a support for Insight meditation, the Nine Bodies teachings offer you a new means for tracking and classifying meditative experiences, which can help you stay present with whatever arises. These explorations may also increase the clarity and specificity of your mindfulness and enable the arising of insight. The retreat will start by focusing on the consciousness that arises in the physical body and then presents a series of meditations for exploring ever more subtle levels of consciousness. These teachings and meditations are not presented as an alternative or a substitute for your current lineage practice but rather, to help you be more empowered in your Insight meditation practice; the retreat will include how to utilize the Nine Bodies teachings while practicing Vipassana. This retreat systematically explores a set of teachings about the nature of consciousness that were first transmitted to Phillip Moffitt by the Himalayan yoga master Sri Swami Premvarni Balyogi twenty years ago. They are the basis for Phillip Moffitt’s book: Awakening through the Nine Bodies.
The format for the retreat will include sitting and walking practice and also a significant amount of background information and detailed instructions about the practices due to the subtle nature of this material.
This retreat is not recommend for students who are experiencing acute depression or grief, or other strong mental challenges. All practice discussions will be groups rather than individual on- to-one meetings.
Financial assistance is available for all Spirit Rock residential retreats. Our scholarship rate is $40/night and available for all those with financial hardship with special funds allocated to People of Color (POC), folks with serious medical conditions, and young adults (age 18-26). Scholarship funding is offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. Scholarships are budgeted per retreat and because they are in high demand, can run out quickly. We encourage you to register for a retreat as close as possible to the registration opening date (lotteries are an exception).
Also, please remember that the cost above is priced as a sliding scale. Please consider paying at the highest level of the sliding scale that you can afford. This allows others who need to pay less the opportunity to attend. Fee is for room and board. Teaching and staffing of the retreats is by donation at the end of the retreat.
