Description:
Who are we? Who do we take ourselves to be? What is identity? These profound and perplexing questions that mystics, philosophers, and now neuroscientists are attempting to answer about the human experience.
In this practical, accessible, and experiential day retreat, we will explore the nature of self, not-self and identity as taught within the Buddhist tradition. Through meditations, inquiry, and reflection, we will explore the freedom and peace that is possible when we understand clearly the nature of self and cease to define ourselves by limiting self-views and constricting identities. Open to all.
Teachings are appropriate for health care professionals as well as the general public. Health care professionals will be able to incorporate the tools and practices offered in this program in ways beneficial to clients or patients. Continuing Education (CE) credit available. See below for attendance requirements and more information.
Learning Objectives for participating health care professionals-
At the end of the program you will better able to:
• Apply, in a clinical setting, perspectives from Buddhist teachings on misperception of identity and how that creates suffering;
• Utilize mindfulness practices to steady the mind and open the heart in preparation for clients and patients, in ways that may improve focus and reduce rumination;
• Incorporate mindful attention to discover a sense of self, in ways that are useful to both oneself and with clients;
• Use mindfulness techniques to identify and prevent habitual reactivity that comes from identification with a limited or negative sense of self, in ways that creates emotional exhaustion for patients and caregivers.
