Description:
In our relationships, we experience most of our greatest joys and our greatest sorrows. The intersection of modern neuroscience and ancient contemplative wisdom offers skillful means for cultivating an open and caring heart, emotional balance during conflicts with others, and more fulfilling relationships. We will cover:
• A summary of the Buddha’s teachings on relationships
• The embodied basis in your brain of empathy, compassion, loving-kindness, and love… and how to strengthen those
• Practical ways to combine strength and heart
• Expanding the circle of “us” to include all of “them”
Teachings are appropriate for health care professionals and K-12 educators, as well as the general public. Health care professionals will be able to incorporate the tools and practices offered in this program in ways beneficial to clients or patients. Continuing Education (CE) credit available. See below for attendance requirements and more information.
Learning Objectives for participating health care professionals-
At the end of the program you will better able to:
• Describe three neural substrates of empathy;
• Describe two fundamental aspects of compassion;
• Describe how recent hominid and human evolution in small hunter-gatherer groups encouraged tendencies toward cooperation within the group and toward aggression between groups;
• Teach others, including patients or clients, two ways to develop self-compassion.
Continuing Education content level: Intermediate
